What is Centrelink Rent Assistance?

Centrelink Rent Assistance is a government payment designed to help low-income Australians who are paying rent in the private market or in community housing. This payment is intended to assist with the cost of rent, especially for those who do not own their home and who are struggling to make ends meet.

The payment is designed to be additional financial support, helping eligible individuals and families with the rising cost of rent, whether you are renting a house, apartment, or even a room. It’s available to eligible people who are receiving certain government benefits, such as the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, or JobSeeker Payment, and who meet the income and asset tests.

In 2025, the government has decided to increase Centrelink Rent Assistance due to the escalating cost of living, particularly housing costs, which have placed significant pressure on lower-income renters.

Why the Rent Assistance Increase in 2025?

Australia has experienced a significant rise in rent prices in recent years, with some cities, like Sydney and Melbourne, seeing rents increase by double-digit percentages in the past few years alone. For example, rental prices in Sydney have risen by as much as 14.7% between 2022 and 2023, creating a financial strain for people who rely on fixed incomes like pensions or unemployment benefits.

The 2025 increase in Rent Assistance is the Australian government’s response to these rising costs. It aims to help individuals and families stay in secure, affordable housing while alleviating some of the pressures on their household budgets. The increased payment will be directed at low-income renters, helping to improve their financial security.

According to a report from The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the median weekly rent across Australian capital cities rose by 7.6% in 2023, making it even harder for people to keep up with housing expenses. This increase in Rent Assistance is an effort to bridge that gap.

New Centrelink Rent Assistance Amounts in 2025

The new Centrelink Rent Assistance rates in 2025 will see an increase in the amount of assistance provided to eligible renters. While the exact figures will depend on your specific circumstances (such as whether you are a single person or have dependents), here’s a general overview of the expected increases:

1. Singles without Children

For single individuals who are renting and eligible for Rent Assistance, the new payment rates will be increased to $250 per fortnight (up from the current $240). This increase helps offset the rising rent costs, which have outpaced income growth for many low-income renters.

2. Couples without Children

Couples who rent will see their payments rise to $380 per fortnight (up from $365). This increase will be especially important for couples who may be paying more in rent due to higher market rates for two-bedroom properties.

3. Families with Children

Families with children will receive an even larger increase, with Rent Assistance rising to $500 per fortnight (up from the current $485). This increase is aimed at helping families who face higher rental costs, particularly those with young children.

4. Special Cases

There are also specific payments for single parents, students, and people with disabilities. For example:

  • Single parents will see an increase of up to $450 per fortnight.
  • People with disabilities or carers can expect to receive payments up to $510 per fortnight, depending on their eligibility and housing situation.

The new rates are designed to reflect the average rent prices in different areas of Australia, ensuring that renters across the country receive appropriate assistance based on local conditions.

Who is Eligible for Rent Assistance?

  • Couples may earn up to $1,500 per fortnight.
  • Assets limits for singles are generally set at $450,000, and for couples, it’s $600,000, excluding the family home.

  1. I would like to know if you are helping the average concession card holder with rent assistance then why just because you are living in government housing or social housing why we don’t get some sort of benefit because everybody lives the same and has the same expenses and yes our rent is lower than the private rental market but they do get a hefty amount of rent assistance and now you are going to even give them more so their pockets change when it comes to money and ours doesn’t it doesn’t seem fair
